I met Scott Robert Lim in May of this year during Texas School of Photography here in Dallas, Texas while talking one of his courses. At the time I didn’t know much about him other than his work was similar to my style or at least what I was striving to create. There were several other professional photographers in his class along with me who have been creating imagery for years. I wasn’t even sure if I belonged in such an environment so the stress and anxiety started within a few minutes after introductions. However, during his lecture something unexpected happened, I connected to Scott on a personal level. He shared his story with us and I could see his emotions and his sincerity were true and candid. This all happened during the first couple of days into the conference. He instilled in us the confidence and ability to continue with our hopes to be something unique and he gave us the tool set and techniques to do it with. Many photographers keep that sort of information to themselves like trade secrets. Not Scott, he was willing to share all he knew. I came home from Texas School full of inspiration and several new friends who share the same passion. It was great to be able to attend another workshop in New York City this past week and be able to see some familiar faces. As we all met in the lobby of the Ravel Hotel, it was apparent that this was going to be an even better experience for me. Scott had attracted several other prominent photographers from around the world. His teaching methodology and personal attention while he mentors his students is unmatched. Within a few hours we sought out other students and created some strong friendships with each other.
With in the first practice shoot we were able to create some great images. Our small groups learned from each other and helped one and other out with equipment, support, or creative insight. Scott also gave his critique on the spot and provided some great direction and suggestions.
This is the Queensborough Bridge leading into Manhattan – taken from my hotel room balcony.
This image was taken in my hotel room during one of our practice shoots. I placed the flash behind the frosted glass of the shower to illuminate the background and provide the highkey image.
Scott instructed us on the use of video lights for photography. This was taken using one video light as the main and a slow shutter to capture the ambient light in the background.
One evening we took models to the Brooklyn Bridge to do a session. It was pretty cold that evening, but we still had a great time taking in the scenery and assisting each other.
We had access to a rooftop balcony from some close friends and clients of Scott where we had more practice honing our skills with some amazing views of the Manhattan skyline.
A few of us ventured into Lower Manhattan on our last night of the workshop to see Ground Zero. I love this image. The construction worker appears to stand post in remembrance what took place there.
These images were taken during some free time we had to explore the city and capture some street photography.
My passion is photography and graphic design, it is something that allows me to be me…enthusiastic, outgoing, and creative. Scott has given me something that I can’t describe in words. Another photographer from Wisconsin said it best in her blog post. Mandie and I became good friends, we ended up in most of the small groups holding strobes and equipment so we got to know each other pretty well. If you get a chance read her post. She wrote what a lot of us can’t express in words.
